Midland, Joondalup, Mirrabooka among Perth districts worst hit by shoplifters

Mirrabooka and Cannington police districts rounded out the worst five.

Australian Retailers Association Executive Director Russell Zimmerman said shoplifting was a growing problem across the nation.

«We are very aware across Australia there are huge issues around shoplifting … it is becoming a bigger problem,» he said.

«We are also aware through the (telecommunications shops) nationally, where gangs walk in and they remove the product from off the shelf, they just rip them off … we’ve seen a number of instances where they have destroyed the shop fittings.

«In some industries, and a telco would be one of them, they are finding it very hard to get people to take the franchise businesses because people are aware of the fact that these issues are occurring.»

Mr Zimmerman said some retail outlets were finding it hard to get staff because of shoplifting.

«Because of what is happening, retailers are finding it hard to get staff because they are saying: ‘why should I work in this industry and leave myself open to these issues?’»

Opposition police spokesman Peter Katsambanis said more police officers were needed to clamp down on the problem.

«We need less police officers stuck behind desks and more people working on the beat to act as a strong deterrent to potential shoplifters,» he said.

«One solution advocated by many small business operators are more active police pushbike patrols, like those we see patrolling the Perth and Fremantle CBD at various times … to ensure police have a high visible presence in our retail precincts.»

Police Minister Michelle Roberts said police had already enhanced bike and beat patrols in the suburbs to target retail theft.

Ms Roberts said Police Commissioner Chris Dawson’s «positive reforms» were also helping tackle the problem.

“We’re cleaning up the mess left behind by the former government which sat on its hands when it came to tackling the meth crisis – a huge driver of crime,» she said.

“Mr Katsambanis should stop second-guessing Commissioner Dawson’s strategy and focus
on something he actually knows about.»
